Fieldstations e.V. is a German non-profit, tax-exempt association promoting research and knowledge of the Anthropocene by deploying stations and agents into specific fields to sense and gather data about humanity’s impact on Earth. Fieldstations curates and moderates workshops and conversations adapted to specific sites, issues and actors (individuals, institutions and communities) within the context of the Anthropocene. Fieldstations creates scenarios, conducts applied experiments and documents results, while disseminating acquired knowledge and artifacts about the Anthropocene via networks, media platforms, exhibitions and its annual journal.

ENTANGLED SPATIAL PRACTICES: JANIS POLAR & DISTANT REALITIES

We would like to invite you to two public and in person lectures on 7th of December 2024, under the title Entangled Spatial Practices:  

Janis Polar is a Basel based visual artist and cultural researcher. He investigates disturbed socio-ecologies in anthropocentric regimes and his own entanglements in them. His work engages at intersections of (media) technology, natural science, political ecology and personal experiences. Sites of research have been places which are often rendered as ‹last frontiers of nature› as well as landscapes of extractions – sites which he observes in their relation to the (non-)human and his own complicity. He mainly works with image-based media, archives and historical objects, combining (post-)documentarian and speculative approaches in installations and audiovisual performances.

Virtuality, the state of existing in a non-physical manner, is a concept that can be interpreted in various contexts. Ancient Greek philosophy views perfection as existing solely in virtuality, it is a reality that is abstracted from measure. In the context of art, virtuality describes the interaction between the spectator and the artwork, generating a sense of interactivity at the socio-psychological level. In the realm of technology, virtuality encompasses the use of immersive computing devices, including virtual reality (VR) and algorithmic simulations. The diverse interpretations of virtuality contribute to new forms of communication deeply rooted in the historical evolution of human culture, perception, and the (un)structuring of societal value.
